The taf-14R is a traditional, mid-power American style tube amp, like the ones that terrorized basements and garages of the 1950's and 60's. This amplifier can trace it's pedigree directly back to the first amplifier that Dave Harris ever built, way back in 1957. Kicking out 14 Watts of clean tube power through a pair of 6V6 tubes in a class A push-pull circuit, this compact head can deliver plenty of power for home use or more intimate venues. A carefully selected solid state reverb module makes this a great amp for spaces with less-than-ideal acoustics, without the extra weight, bulk, and finnickiness of a spring chamber. Like it's little brother, the taf-10X, things are kept pretty simple, with a responsive two-knob tone control, one of this amp's real strengths is delivering solid tones no matter where you point the chicken heads.
As with all Tube Amp Factory products, this head is entirely made by hand. Aside from the reverb module and an extremely special power supply circuit, the amplifier is 100% point-to-point wiring, soldered by hand. In fact, the power supply circuit in the taf-14R includes a special DC power circuit for the preamp filaments, further eliminating noise and hum and making this one of the most transparent amp circuits on the market. All these things make this our most popular amplifier, and a favorite of many guitarists.
HAND SOLDERED POINT TO POINT WIRING
Like every Tube Amp Factory product, the 14R is manufactured and assembled completely by hand, and with a 100% point to point amplifier circuit, the result is a very transparent, low noise, low hum output.
EXTRA LOW-HUM DC PREAMP FILAMENT POWER
As a bonus with the integrated digital reverb, the preamp tubes of the 14R receive their filament power in the form of clean, steady DC current from our custom handmade power supply circuit. The result is the elimination of another potential source of noise and hum pickup at one of the most sensitive, high-amplification stages of the circuit. The result is that, without an instrument plugged in, this amp can be hooked up to a speaker, and have the volume knob cranked all the way to 10 without creating massive amounts of hum you could expect with lesser amps. It's a little thing, but it's pretty cool, trust us.
HIGH QUALITY INTEGRATED REVERB
The 14R benefits from one of the best solid state reverb modules available. Why solid state? Several reasons. First, we wanted to be able to integrate a great sounding reverb into all of our amps, including the heads, without making them big, heavy, and cumbersome. Second, reverb wasn't initially something we planned on including in any of our amps, because simple was the entire name of the game at first, and adding bells and whistles just wasn't in the plan. After receiving enough requests for reverb, though, we exhaustively tested many different options, spring tanks and digital modules alike. The solution we found and liked the most came in the form of a board developed for electric organs (the original application of reverb effects in general), and it just worked out the way we wanted it to. Thus, all of our reverb-equipped models utilize the same tough, resilient, compact, lightweight, great-sounding digital reverb.
FAT MODE, FOR THOSE WHO LIKE THEIR AMP TO MISBEHAVE A LITTLE
Within the preamp circuit, the taf-14R features an inverse feedback stage which uses a filtered, inverted signal from the power stage to clean up much of the distortion created by pushing the power stage. FAT mode cancels this feedback, and allows the 6V6 power stage to generate healthy amounts of classic, vintage tube distortion when the volume knob is turned up high.
